Team TBA, Project Sixth

While my focus at Imagine Cup was to highlight as many girl team collaborations as possible, a chance introduction to a group of seemingly laid back group of 4 fine gentleman and their distinguished mentor turned out to be like a theme ride at Disney; at first quiet and unassuming start and then a 100 foot drop straight into the rabbit’s hole like Alice in Wonderland. This was akin to mixing what is completely harmless chemicals when separate and finding you have accidentally created something very explosive, but in a good way.

TBA (To Be Announced) as a team is a diverse mix of smart, extremely talented, enthusiastic and community minded individuals.  They have no choice; their mentor Farhad is all the above and more. He is both an inspiration with his boundless energy and a guiding light that comes from his innumerable accomplishments.

TBA’s entry was both simple in concept but explosive in its application to a deadly problem for millions, no clean drinking water. We take water for granted in so many ways and this “adventurous” game not only reinforces the need for us to take action but the game in of itself does take action. As players subscribe or “pay to play” the funds are diverted to the charity Water.  This organization has given almost 1 million people the ability to drink clean water via drilling and capturing rain water as just two examples of the life altering projects they have completed.

Beyond the competition Nic and Will took the time to give me an in depth view on the gaming industry, we shared a ton of laughs at ESPN and later at the hotel they lent a hand with some video edits.  Their school and Farhad have much to be proud of.  And in turn TBA is extremely lucky to have a mentor in Farhad who is a rarity in the world of teaching.

I am also very proud to have spent several hours getting to know and befriending people who prove that today’s youth are going to make a difference, one Imagine Cup at a time.

Nic, Will, Jonathon and Danny, I congratulate you on this amazing journey you are on and will be following you guys going forward. Good luck today at 4:30 when the 4 U.S. finalists are announced.
