If I just tap my ruby red slippers…

There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.

University of Ottawa, here I come!

Alright, so I haven’t yet applied, and won’t for 2 and ½ more semesters; however (!), the minute applications are due, my first will be to the University of Ottawa and their recently launched Centre for Law, Technology, and Society. Never could I have thought those three words would look so beautiful next to one another.

Society’s institutions are interdependent: law affects all facets of life and now, technology does too. It’s important that two dominant social institutions be studied side by side in an effort to learn the effects they have on each other. The Centre will identify the subjects of Information Technology; Intellectual Property; Biotechnology; Bioethics; Science, Technology, and Society; Human Rights; Governance and Public Policy; Enabling technologies, e-transactions; Digital media and communications; Safety and Security; and Technology and Society. These are broad subjects that will be studied as the interwoven aspects of society that they are, as well as from different social perspectives.

“The Centre has three main goals: research excellence, training excellence and public relevance. It seeks to support its members by developing a national and international network of associated researchers and institutions, in law and in many other domains, and serving as a nexus for partnership-building and collaborative scholarship.

The Centre is also creating many more opportunities for students to be exposed to, and become engaged in, cutting-edge multidisciplinary research, discussion and debate in the field of law and technology. It is expanding the number and scope of opportunities for students to include the full gamut of research, advocacy, and knowledge dissemination. Our goal is to inspire the next generation of researchers, practitioners and policy-makers in this exciting field.”

I may not have pig tails, a blue dress, a tin man, a cowardly lion, or a scarecrow – but I know exactly where I want to be!
